Removing Your Carpet: Helpful Tips

Removing old carpet is the first step to a successful SeaDek installation. Taking your time during this process will make surface prep and final installation much easier.

Carpet removal is often the most time-consuming part of the process, but it’s also the most important. Taking the time to do it right will make surface prep easier and help ensure your SeaDek adheres properly and performs long-term.

Helpful tips for carpet removal:

• Start by removing any trim pieces, snaps, or hardware holding the carpet in place.
• Use a utility knife to cut the carpet into manageable sections for easier removal.
• Slowly pull the carpet up to avoid splintering wood or damaging the deck underneath.
• Expect leftover adhesive, staples, or fasteners. This is normal and will be addressed during surface prep.
• A heat gun or hair dryer can help soften stubborn adhesive and make removal easier.
• Wear gloves and safety glasses, as old carpet and adhesives can be sharp or brittle.
• Once the carpet is removed, thoroughly inspect the surface to determine whether it is wood, fiberglass, or aluminum, as each requires different preparation steps.

Prepping Your Surface: Helpful Tips

A properly prepped surface is critical for SeaDek adhesion and long-term performance. The surface should be clean, smooth, dry, and free of contaminants before installation.

Wood Surface Preparation

Wood surfaces typically require the most preparation but also provide an excellent bonding surface when prepared correctly. Here are some helpful tips:

• Remove all remaining carpet adhesive using a scraper, heat gun, or adhesive remover.
• Sand the surface to remove residue and create a smooth, even finish.
• Repair any damaged, soft, or rotted wood before proceeding.
• Once clean and smooth, seal or paint the wood surface according to SeaDek installation guidelines. For wood, we recommend a Primer first and then a One-Part Polyurethane Top Side Paint (Recommended Brand - Total Boat Wet Edge). This step helps to prevent moisture absorption and ensures consistent adhesion.
• Allow paint or sealant to fully cure before installing SeaDek.

PRO TIP✅- SeaDek should never be applied directly to raw or unfinished wood.

Fiberglass or Aluminum Preparation Tips:

Fiberglass and aluminum surfaces generally require less prep but must still be thoroughly cleaned. Here are some helpful tips:

• Remove all adhesive residue using an approved adhesive remover such as lacquer thinner or a marine-safe solvent.
• Light sanding may be required to remove stubborn residue or to smooth out uneven areas.
• Wipe the entire surface down to remove dust, oils, and cleaner residue.
• Ensure the surface is completely dry before installation.

⚠️ Important: SeaDek adhesive performance depends entirely on proper surface preparation. Incomplete adhesive removal, contamination, or installing over uncured paint can result in adhesion issues.
